Service Description

Parents are often concerned about attention and/or dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia but don't want to put their child through a full psycho-educational evaluation. For that reason, PEAS for Kids is offering short screenings with an accompanying brief write-up that you may take to your child's school to request support if necessary. Screenings that are offered include: - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): The Test of Variables Of Attention (TOVA) is a computer administered continuous performance test which has become widely used as an adjunct for detecting characteristics of ADHD. It is also an objective method of assessing characteristics of ADHD, without relying solely on parent’s/teachers reports and/or an interview. We offer this test as a diagnostic tool to determine whether your child has characteristics that are similar to that of a student who has been diagnosed with ADHD. - Dyslexia/Dysgraphia/Dyscalculia Dyslexia is the term used when children have difficulty learning to read; Dysgraphia is the term used when children have difficulty with writing; Dyscalculia is the term used when children have difficulty with mathematics. The dyslexia screener provides very basic information to determine if intervention is necessary to promote reading success. The dyslexia screener includes a brief cognitive evaluation, pre-reading and reading accomplishments, and phonological processing. A concise written statement of the results is provided to parents. Although no diagnosis may be made, the screener provides essential information for the determination of the need for intervention. It is appropriate for children who have no attentional, emotional, or other learning issues. Because of the importance of early detection, we offer dyslexia screening evaluations in addition to our full psycho-educational evaluations. Please refer to the Psycho-educational Evaluation service for more information regarding a full psycho-educational evaluation.
