Private Evaluation vs. School Evaluation: What's the Difference?
When Indiana parents suspect their child has a learning disability, one of the first questions they face is: should I request an evaluation through my child's school, or go the private route? The answer depends on your situation — and understanding the differences can save you time and frustration.
The School Evaluation (At No Cost to You)
Under federal law (IDEA) and Indiana's Article 7, your child's public school is required to evaluate your child at no cost if you suspect a disability and make a written request. The school has 50 calendar days from the date of your written consent to complete the evaluation — Indiana's specific legal timeline. School evaluations are designed to answer one question: does your child qualify for services? They may not assess areas like processing speed, executive function, or co-occurring conditions as thoroughly as a private evaluation would.
The Private Evaluation
A private evaluation, like those conducted by PEAS for Kids, is an independent, comprehensive assessment written with you — the parent — in mind. Private evaluations are especially useful when:
The school has denied your evaluation request
You disagree with the school's evaluation results
You want a second opinion before an eligibility meeting
Your child's struggles don't fit neatly into school eligibility categories
You want a more complete picture of your child's full learning profile
Can I Use a Private Evaluation with the School?
Yes. Indiana schools are required to consider private evaluation results when making eligibility and placement decisions. You can bring a private evaluation report to an IEP or eligibility meeting and request that the team consider it. You can also request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) at public expense if you disagree with the school's evaluation — though the school may challenge this.
Which Is Right for Your Family?
If your child attends an Indiana public school and you want to start the process, requesting a school evaluation is a reasonable first step — it costs nothing. If you aren't satisfied with those results, or you want a more detailed picture upfront, a private evaluation from PEAS for Kids fills in the gaps.
